UNDERGRADUATE CONSORTIUM:

CALL FOR PARTICIPATION

The Undergraduate Consortium (UC) hosted by the LatinX in CV Workshop will offer undergraduate students the opportunity to

  • Present and receive feedback from researchers and academics about their current research, their next steps towards their final undergraduate projects, or even ideas for the next steps as a master's or doctorate student

  • Meet prospective advisors for graduate programs abroad

  • Expand their professional network

  • Receive advice for resources for their academic career

This UC will be held in conjunction with the LatinX in CV Workshop at CVPR 2024 and targets students who are no more than two years from their graduation date (no later than June 2026). The focus is to highlight proposals for final projects and build relationships for graduate programs. Students are encouraged to discuss their past experiences, but the focus is on new ideas that have not yet been completed and might need feedback. This could be, but not limited to, a proposal for their final project, for example.

Students accepted into this UC will be expected to attend the LatinX in CV workshop and present their work in a poster session to receive feedback. They may receive travel grants to support their participation in person. There will also be an opportunity for continuous feedback and discussion using an extended post-workshop format linked to the LXAI forums. The best presentation will be eligible for a prize.

Applications instructions

Applicants must submit the following materials in full for consideration for the program through CMT:

Personal Statement

Prepare a 2-page personal statement that describes your interest in computer vision by discussing the following topics:

  • What are your interests?

  • What leadership skills have you developed so far?

  • What barriers have you encountered and how have you overcome them?

You may freely format your personal statement as long as it contains your personal information and research title. A suggested template is provided as follows:

Research Statement

Applicants are also required to submit a 2-page research statement describing a project that they might undertake as their final undergraduate project. Support your proposal with evidence that is feasible and valuable. Students are encouraged to describe any prior experience with computer vision as the basis for their proposed work.

The scope of this statement should follow the same as a workshop extended abstract and include, for example:

  • Introduction

  • Background or related works

  • Approach or early methodology

  • Evaluation and experiments

  • Discussion and early results, if they exist

  • Conclusion

Please remember that:

  • You need to include a descriptive title for your work (instead of “Research Summary”)

  • The audience from the workshop is knowledgeable about computer vision but might not be experts in your specific field. Introduce the content at a high level so that the general audience can appreciate your ideas.

  • This research statement MUST be 2 pages, with one additional page for references.

For the Research Statement, please download and use the CVPR 2024 Author Kit for your submission. In this case, do not submit a blind copy; instead, add your name and affiliation to the paper.

LXCV Research Program

Research in computer vision and other areas of artificial intelligence has advanced significantly in recent years. As a result, we now have AI-driven tools and applications with broad implications for billions of people. However, there is a need for a better understanding of these technologies among the general public. Therefore, we consider it essential that researchers and students in the AI and computer vision fields make efforts to make their research more accessible to the general public.

To address this problem, LXCV has updated its research program. In this updated edition, bachelor's or master's students will be paired with coaches (researchers from industry or academia) to explore the mentors' research areas. From April 1st to June 15th, mentors will guide students by sharing articles, applications, and recent advancements in the chosen research area to facilitate engaging discussions during paired sessions. By the end of the program, the students are expected to produce a dissemination article about the chosen research topic and make a short presentation during a virtual seminar.

  • This research program aims to:

    • Support young LatinX students by providing them with opportunities for interaction with renowned researchers to learn about state-of-the-art areas of computer vision. Moreover, coaches will guide students through the entire research process, i.e., from defining a research problem to submitting a dissemination article.

    • Showcase the research conducted by LatinX researchers worldwide and share their experiences, perspectives, and concerns with young talents interested in the field.

    • Engage students in the LXCV community, offering access to virtual events about enhancing skills such as effective writing and presentation and career-related topics such as applying to graduate programs.

  • We will match coaches with students based on their research topics and expressed interests. During the ten weeks of the program, we encourage coaches and students to meet weekly, but the frequency of the meetings can be adjusted based on the availability of both coaches and students. These one-on-one meetings will be focused on obtaining an in-depth understanding of a specific research topic while learning how to conduct research.

In addition to the meetings with the coaches, we will invite the students to several virtual sessions on topics related to career development, scholarship opportunities, and testimonials from previous attendees of LXCV workshops and researchers in the field. Moreover, as the expected outcome of this research program is to produce a dissemination article, we will also have some invited speakers and tutorials about this. The best articles will be published in a special issue of the Mexican AI magazine Komputer Sapiens (specific details about the submission process will be given after the end of the mentoring program).
